Herbal Medicine, sometimes called to as Botanical or Medicine Herbalism, is the use of herbs for their therapeutic intervention or medicinal value. An herb is a plant or part of important for its medicinal, fragrant, aromatic or tasty qualities. Herb plants produce and contain a diversity of chemical essences that act upon the body.
Herbal medicine is the first form of healthcare known to humankind. Herbs had been used by all cultures throughout human history. It was an integral part of the development of modern civilization. Primitive man observed and valued the great variety of plants available to him. The plants provided us medicine, simple fare, clothing, and shelter. Much of the curative use of plants seems to have been developed through observing of wild nature, and by tests and errors.
As time went on, each folk added the medicinal knowledge of herbs in their area to its knowledgebase. They regularly collected information on plants and developed well-defined herbal pharmacopoeias. Indeed, well into the 20th century much of the pharmacopoeia of scientific medicine was derived from the herbal wisdom of native peoples. Many drugs commonly used today are of herbal basis. Indeed, about 25 percent of the prescription drugs dispensed in the United States contain at least one active component derived from herbal material. Some are made from plant extracts; others are synthesized as imitation a natural plant compound.
